TiVo shows via https

TiVo shows via https

I found a blog today, and in one of the comments it explained how to reach your TiVo with a web browser, instead of the TiVo desktop software. I tried and found it worked like a charm.

Just browse to
https://mytivosipaddr/
...for me this was https://192.168.0.2/

You can also browse to the http address, and you will get this static homepage.

When prompted for username/password, enter "tivo" and your media access key. You can get your key at here. After that, you should see a web page like the picture here, and you can click the download links to grab your shows at a faster rate than thru the Tivo desktop software.

Shameless plug: if you activate a new Tivo, please use my email address so I can get the referral points. Simply use [tpullis at yahoo dot com]. If you have already activated, please contact me with your 15 digit service number so I can get the referral. Much appreciated!

Flickr pics from a TiVo employee

This guy (earthdog) must work for TiVo. You can see some mini-golf office fun and the Mini Cooper car they gave to the winner of the TiVo Ambassador contest.

Pics are here.

Do you want a Tivo Guru Guide?

TiVo is coming out with another new feature called Guru Guides. They'll match your viewing interests with lists of the best TV programs from "experts", cultural leaders like Sports Illustrated, Billboard, CNET, and Entertainment Weekly who know what's worth watching.

I really don't see the value here, but will check it out when it comes available and report my findings. You can get alerted when the feature is available here.

TiVo partners with Brightcove

I've kept my eye on Brightcove every once in a while, since the founder Jeremy Allaire introduced this new venture a few years ago. Jeremy also founded the ColdFusion Web application server product that I've made my career on since 1999. Over the past 10 years, ColdFusion ownership has changed hands from Allaire, to Macromedia, and recently to Adobe. Back to the subject at hand, this new deal will make it possible to view Brightcove Internet TV services via the TiVo box. I'm sure more details will come soon, but here's the press release that explains the deal thus far.

New FREE TiVo box offer

TiVo is running a new special for a factory renewed 40-hour box, free of charge, when you prepay for 1 year of service for $155.40. That breaks down to just $12.95/month. Normal rate is currently $19.95/month for 1 year, so its a good deal to get your feet wet with TiVo.

New Product Watch feature

TiVo just announced a new program called Product Watch. This lets you see targeted advertising for products and services you are interested in. This is a new twist on the 30 second commercials that most of us skip while watching a program, but sometimes we stop to watch funny spots or those that strike our interest. Well, here is a new way to give you the advertising that fits your desires. You can get on the priority list now to get this new update.
