Best way to schedule your TiVo online

I've tried many ways to schedule my TiVo remotely, none of them are perfect.

1) Yahoo TV - I used to use this a few years ago all the time, then suddenly the connection to my TiVo was often broken and I haven't gone back to it.

2) Tivo.com TV Listings Guide (http://www3.tivo.com/tivo-tco/tvlistings.do) - old way that is painful to find your way to the show you want.

3) m.TiVo.com - this is the mobile phone version of the scheduler, but I use it in my web browser. Works great as you can setup your standard prefs and use 1-click record.

4) NEW BETA - this one has potential. I just used it to schedule the new Conan show and a Twins game to different TiVo machines. I got word about this from Twitter a few weeks ago...

The basketball I "won" in TiVo's march madness contest on Facebook just arrived today. I was lucky enough to be one of first 100 people to post a comment in their contest thread. It was deflated in the package and delivered by FedEx. I went straight out to the garage and pumped it up. Thanks TiVo!

I watched the movie Tropic Thunder over the weekend and was laughing how they brought up TiVo a few times. Then at the end of the movie, TiVo becomes the hero and saves the day. In the Ben Stiller movie he plays Tugg Speedman, and Matthew McConaughey shows up in the jungle with a TiVo machine that he promised his actor client Tugg he'd have while on location shooting his movie. He shows up and has to toss it up in the air in front of a rocket that's about to blow up the helicopter Tugg and the other actors are riding in.

After I saw this scene, I rewound and I pointed my digital camera at my flat panel TV to record the 1 minute video clip of this heroic moment for our friend the TiVo box. I hope I'm not violating any Dreamworks' copyright, but figured this is only going to help entice more people to see this funny movie. Go TiVo!

Are we jerks for raving about TiVo?

According this MSNBC tech article, yes we are. The author thinks since it really is just for TV, it's not that important. He goes on to write,

"it's not self-improving and it's not going to cure cancer"

I beg to differ. The benefits of TiVo are countless. Don't most people chat up with friends the valuable products and services they believe in? Why would we be jerks for talking about a great product like TiVo? This author has it wrong and you might be surprised to see the other seven products in the list. A few others don't belong either, but especially TiVo.

Netflix streaming coming soon to TiVo

Just caught this news on Hacking Netflix blog. I'm thrilled as I was starting to get the itch to buy a Roku player. Only downside is it won't be available to TiVo Series 2 owners. Excerpt from the HN blog:

Netflix and TiVo will start testing the service with a few thousand customers, and most customers will have access to Netflix streaming by the holidays. Netflix streaming movies will be provided to TiVo subscribers at no cost (Netflix subscription required), but will be limited to TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD, and HD XL boxes.

I just saw the movie: Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay

The movie is pretty lame, and I'm not here to review it.

There was a mention of TiVo in a scene on the boat ride from Cuba to Miami, and Kumar says to the Cubans, "I'm telling you, Jorge, the first thing you have to do when you get to America, buy a device called TiVo, Okay? Freedom means nothing if you're a slave to regular programing. I promise you that."

TiVo and Blackberry announced a deal on Sept 11th. It sounds pretty similar to how they collaborated with Verizon back in March 2007.

The initial launch will enable TiVo subscribers who have a BlackBerry to call up television programming details on the phones and to use the phones to set their DVRs to record shows.

Cranky Geeks is a weekly techie videocast on the net and available on TiVo as a Season Pass or individual episode.

YouTube videos coming to TiVo

Yesterday, TiVo announced the ability to watch YouTube videos. The service will be available later this year to broadband-connected subscribers with TiVo Series3™ DVRs, including the new TiVo HD. This is great news for owners of the supported platforms, but not so if you are still a Series 2 owner. This could be a huge factor to make Series 2 owners upgrade to a new model.

Nightmare TiVo setup

A recent MSNBC article describes one woman's failed attempt to setup her new TiVo. She struggled for 5 hours with the instructions and online video setup guides before throwing in the towel and giving up. The next day she had the cable company out to complete the setup, and still ran into problems with the final service activation step using the phone line. So she went out and bought the TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter for $65 at BestBuy and that worked. She admits that she's not very comfortable with TV electronics setup, so maybe she should have hired the Geek Squad from square one and avoided this bad experience altogether. What other local services besides the Geek Squad and cable company will make house calls for a TiVo setup at a reasonable cost?

The TiVo Guy

I found another TV show with a TiVo theme. This time it is Larry David's HBO show, Curb Your Enthusiasm. In episode 57 on Oct 21st, Larry has the TiVo guy come out. Cheryl calls from the airplane where she is experiencing turbulence while the TiVo guy is over and Larry hangs up on her. She returns and tells Larry she's leaving.

Can you find a "TiVo guy" service in the phone book? Maybe Best Buy's Geek Squad would make a house call like this. In any case, my previous blog post had noted some other TV programs (Bernie Mac and Sex in the City) that featured TiVo. If you know of any others, add your comments here.

His passion for Tivo is fading

This blogger was a TiVo fanatic, but his passion began to fade when the $800 Series 3 was introduced. The cost was just way too high for this High Def solution for his family. So he decided to give the Comcast DVR a try and posted this comparison, which actually shed a good light on the Comcast unit. Then when the $300 HD box came out, he felt it was too little, too late. I found this screen shot of a customer's live chat with Comcast. Apparently Comcast will charge their subscribers $2.95 per month per DVR for the new TiVo service. That's not a bad deal compared to TiVo's monthly service charges with a genuine TiVo box.

This service has started its rollout in the New England area, according to this press release.

The support area of tivo.com was taken down for maintenance for over 24 hours Tues - Weds. It's now back online with new content. I actually spoke to a customer service person earlier today about my troubles with the ESPN program listings I blogged about yesterday. The rep said they were relaunching it sometime today with new content, and needed to take it down to do the conversion. A brief browse through the site tonight already led me to an issue, so it's still not quite up to par.

1. From the main Support page, click "Contact Support" in lower right
2. On this page, there is a section at the bottom titled"Program Guide Issues". Perfect, that's the info I want to read.
3. I click the link for "Channels Missing or Incorrect in Live Guide"

CNET has produced some nice video reviews of both the new TiVo HD, as well as last year's Series 3. John Falcone, Senior editor at CNET, reviews the units, and shows the cable card slots and lots of looks at the on screen menus, remotes, and the TiVo boxes themselves.

The TiVo HD review is 2 minutes in length, while the Series 3 plays for 3 minutes. These are both definately worth watching if you're shopping for one of the High Def TiVo units in the near future. CNET has rated each of these with Very Good at 7.7 out of 10.

Yahoo TV has updated TiVo scheduling

Ten days ago, I blogged that Yahoo's TiVo scheduling feature was down while they upgraded their service. Today I checked again, and it is back up. However, as a result of the upgrade, users who have previously registered their TiVo devices will need to re-sync their TiVo account to Yahoo in order to take advantage of changes they made.

Read Yahoo! TV teams's blog for full details on what they updated. Most importantly, you can now schedule a Series 3 box, which previously was not possible.

Will Pause TV put pause on TiVo´s future?

Motley Fool, who owns shares of TiVo, just wrote an article to discuss what TiVo should do to compete with an upcoming technology called Pause TV. On that note, it looks like the adoption of hard drives in consumer electronics will soon make its way into televisions. Once that happens, Tivo needs to be ahead of the curve, so Motley Fool thinks they need to introduce a "TiVo TV". However, Humax already had a concept LCD TV with integrated TiVo, but it never made it to market. Perhaps now is the time to get this going again. What a great value add to have in a LCD or Plasma TV, with the cut-throat pricing and low margins for retailers. Hopefully TiVo still has this product in the labs and is looking for another TV partner to bring it to market, with Series 3 integration this time!

We've all seen a dog that fetches the morning paper. Some people have even trainined their dog to fetch them a soda or beer from the fridge. Both are great tricks, but this dog has taken the art of fetching to a new level. She will bring the TiVo remote over to her owners, what a good girl. Now if they can train her to program a Season Pass of Animal Planet, she might be appearing live on Letterman's pet tricks instead of just this photo on Flickr.

This blog post sheds a dim light on TiVo's future, arguing they can't scale in the rapid evolution of TV content over the internet. However, I continue to believe that TiVo will keep innovating to stay ahead and find new ways to grow subscribers and generate revenue. I think they are perfectly positioned to ride the massive wave of HDTV adoption with the Series 3 that will happen over the next two years. Remember, analog TV broadcasts will cease and be replaced with digital signals on Feb 17, 2009. Along with this, CableCARD technology is going to officially take effect on July 1st. This puts TiVo in a nice sweet spot for the moment, competing with the cable companies with a much better set top box. What are your thoughts on TiVo's future in this rapidly changing television landscape?

TiVo in Australia, why it took so long

Website asking for your activation referral

People continue to find clever ways to get TiVo referrals. For myself, I use this blog in hopes to get more. Since starting my Troy on Tivo blog about 1.5 years ago, I've only obtained 4 from kind strangers. I continue to hold out hope to eventually have enough for the Series 3 prize like fellow blogger Alex recently achieved, wow! Unfortunately, I can't put in the time to blog about TiVo every day, resulting in less readership and potential new TiVo subscribers. But when I do blog, I try to make posts that are insightful and unique. If you want to help my cause, please use my email [tpullis at yahoo dot com] upon activation. Much appreciated :)

One attempt I've seen is postings made to craigslist asking for them. This goes against the terms of the site, and usually the postings are quickly removed. So tonight I found a new approach I had yet to encounter -- a website www.freetivorewards.com devoted to asking for them. He explains that he will give away half of the TiVo rewards points as prizes to people who use him as their TiVo referrer. For example, if he gets 14 referrals, he will have 70,000 TiVo rewards points--enough for two ipod Nanos--one goes to him and one to a lucky soul drawn from the 14. He even has a top 10 reasons list to further state his case. The FAQ page explains that the site was launched in Feb 2006, so maybe it hasn't worked out and he's given up.

Australians will soon have access to TiVo, a mere 10 years after it launched in the US. New Zealand will get it as well. Too bad the Aussies had to wait so long. These are perfect replicas of the TiVo mascot made into cakes for a wedding. Kudos to this woman, who has some major baking talent to make them stand up like that. I just can't figure out why somebody would want a TiVo theme for their wedding cake? Here's wishing them a long life filled with love, happiness, children, and ... TiVo.

Ok, I guess I've been waaaay out of the loop for a week. I finally got caught up on TiVo news tonight and learn from Dave Zatz's blog that TiVo launched a new mega ad campaign under the "My TiVo Gets Me" theme. There's a new website, commercials, and a big contest for a HDS3 and Plasma TV where you can create a profile and upload a video to YouTube. Hopefully this will "get" TiVo a boost in sales!

In the weekly BestBuy ad, they are offering a $50 gift card free when purchasing a single-tuner 80-hr TiVo box. The box itself is advertised at $220, so in essence it's "free" when you add together the current $170 rebate and gift card. However, the gift card is only valid on future purchases, so you can't put it towards the TiVo during checkout at the store or online. Today I was browsing Tivo.com to find some info about the latest Spring 2007 service update I just received via a new message in my DVR. I'll blog about that update in another post. During my search, I found a nice 78 page PDF document entitled "2006 Service Update Guide". This looks like a very handy resource, especially if you bought your box a few years ago. Basically, it brings your owners manual (Viewers Guide) up to date. Check it out.

The Update Guide starts with:
This Service Update Guide describes features and settings that may not have been available when you first purchased your TiVo® Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and which are not documented in your original Viewer’s Guide.
Some TiVo DVRs are capable of receiving different levels of TiVo service (either TiVo Basic or TiVo Plus service). This guide
documents features of the TiVo Plus service.

Apparently this 26" Humax branded LCD TV with integrated TiVo was demo'd at CES2005, but never brought to market. Bummer... it would have been a unique product with added value over the other LCD's in its peer group. Would you have bought this TV to avoid having the additional TiVo hardware box stacked along with your array of electronics components?

I just got a marketing email from TiVo today, telling me the new Amazon Unbox / TiVo video download service has officially launched. As a promo offer, if you register for this new broadband service by April 30, 2007, you get $15 in free movies and TV shows!

I did the registration/setup, and my first download is Jet Li's Fearless. The movie download price was $3.99, but the order form showed Discounts/Promotions: -$ 3.99 on the following line.

I'll blog again about my experience watching the movie in the next day or so. Here's what the marketing email I received had to say. So far so good!

TiVo recording titles from your "Greased" Netflix queue

Last week, I blogged about how some folks were attempting to use Yahoo Pipes to have TiVo record stuff in their Netflix queue. Now one of the same bloggers I first read about this has tried a new approach. He uses a Greasemonkey (Firefox extension) script to add a new link directly on Netflix's queue page.
